Concerned Citizens of Nigeria Demand Immediate Release of Member, Iyiola Monsuru

Osogbo, December 2, 2026.

The Concerned Citizens of Nigeria (CCN), a non-political and law-abiding civic organisation, has been informed of the arrest of one of its members, Mr. Iyiola Monsuru, on Friday, following his report of an ugly and unfortunate incident that occurred at the residence of the APC governorship candidate for the 2026 election, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, in Ikire.

According to information available to us, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, around 5:00 a.m., during the distribution of two modu of rice and envelopes allegedly containing 2,000 naira each. Sadly, a stampede reportedly ensued, leading to the death of a woman, Mrs. Buli Balogun (popularly known as Iya Eleelo), alongside two other persons.

As a responsible and non-political organisation, we firmly believe that incidents of this nature, especially those involving loss of lives, should be thoroughly investigated rather than silenced. The arrest of a citizen for reporting such an incident raises serious concerns about freedom of expression and civic responsibility.

It is important to recall that in a statement earlier released and signed by me as the National Coordinator, I clearly called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to immediately wade into the matter and ensure that justice is served for the deceased and their families. In that release, reference was made to a similar tragic incident in Ibadan involving a veteran radio presenter Oriyomi Hamzat and Her Majesty, Olori Silekunola Ogunwusi, where justice was pursued irrespective of social status or influence.

Concerned Citizens of Nigeria therefore demands the immediate and unconditional release of our member, Mr. Iyiola Monsuru, while urging the police and other security agencies to focus on a proper, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the incident.

As an organisation committed to justice, accountability, and the rule of law, we hereby express our readiness to cooperate fully with security agencies at ensuring a fair and thorough investigation of this matter.

Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done.

Signed:

Apesin Abiodun Adegoke
National Coordinator
Concerned Citizens of Nigeria
