Adeleke's Aide, Apesin Abiodun Adegoke Challenges Osun Police Claims Over Arrest, Denies Court Arraignment

A civic actor and a Senior Special Assistant to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Apesin-Abiodun Adegoke, has issued a rejoinder disputing claims by the Osun State Police Command regarding his arrest and detention, describing the police account as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Adegoke rejected reports attributed to the police that he was arraigned before the Federal High Court, Osogbo, on 9 January 2026, alongside another individual, Iyiola Monsuru. He maintained that he was never taken before any court on that date and was instead held in police custody from 7 January 2026 until the late hours of 12 January 2026, when he said he was granted administrative bail.

According to Adegoke, the bail was granted only after a bailiff from the Federal High Court served the police command with processes connected to a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on his behalf. He stated that he was served with a copy of a charge at 4:12 p.m. on 9 January 2026, but was not physically produced in court on that day.

Adegoke further denied claims that he was invited by the police prior to his arrest, stating that he was apprehended at a mechanic workshop along Ring Road while repairing his wife’s vehicle. He alleged that officers involved in the arrest told him they believed he would not honour an invitation if issued, a claim he described as untrue.

He also rejected assertions that he was arrested from a hideout or had been evading the police, insisting that he had publicly stated his willingness to report to the police if invited. He cited comments he said he made earlier on a social media platform indicating that he resided in Osun State and would present himself at the police command if contacted.

Addressing allegations of confession or plea for leniency, Adegoke stated that he never admitted to any offence, pleaded guilty, or begged for leniency. He challenged the police to produce any extra-judicial statement allegedly containing such admissions.

In the rejoinder, Adegoke also raised concerns over the circulation of a video recording of his interrogation with a Deputy Commissioner of Police, which he said later appeared on social media. He questioned how the recording, allegedly made within a police office, came into the possession of a political actor unconnected to the case.

He disclosed that his legal team had been instructed to file petitions with the Police Service Commission and other relevant bodies over what he described as unprofessional conduct, including the alleged leakage of the video.

Adegoke concluded by demanding that the Osun State Police Command provide evidence of any invitation issued to him prior to his arrest and proof of any alleged admission of guilt or plea for leniency.

The Osun State Police Command has not publicly responded to the claims raised in the rejoinder as of the time of publication.

We will keep you posted with updates as events unfold on the impending legal battle in Osun on the matter.
