Osun Local Government Allocation: Apesin Abiodun Adegoke Urges LPPC to Sanction Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN

Modakeke, August 3, 2025.

Social critic and public affairs analyst, Apesin Abiodun Adegoke, has called on the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) to sanction the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, over what he described as “willful disobedience” to the June 13, 2025, ruling of the Court of Appeal on the Osun State local government leadership crisis.

In a strongly worded statement, Apesin accused the Attorney General of compromising the integrity of his office by failing to act on the Appeal Court’s judgment that nullified the tenure of the so-called Yes/No Chairmen hastily installed by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola. The election, he noted, violated the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates a mandatory 360-day notice before local government elections, a provision Oyetola allegedly ignored by conducting the elections with only 60 days' notice.

“You will recall,” Apesin stated, “that in a public release last week, where I questioned what wrong the people of Osun had committed to deserve such calculated hardship from Mr. Oyetola. He was quoted as saying he had assembled a legal team to exploit technical loopholes in order to divert the seized local government allocations to the sacked Yes/No Chairmen, even after the clear pronouncements of the Court of Appeal.”

He further alleged that Oyetola, in a private APC stakeholders’ meeting in Osun, boasted of plans to cripple governance at the grassroots level and discredit the performing administration of Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke. According to Apesin, Oyetola reportedly expressed resentment toward former President Buhari for not allowing the 2022 election to be rigged in his favor and vowed that the federal machinery would be fully deployed to return the APC to power in 2026 by force.

Apesin expressed deep concern over Prince Fagbemi’s continued silence since the Court of Appeal's ruling. “His silence is not only troubling but confirms earlier concerns about his lack of impartiality in the Osun Imbroglio. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the nation's Chief Law Officer, Prince Fagbemi is expected to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law above partisan loyalty or personal relationships.”

He reminded the public that Prince Fagbemi had served as lead counsel for Oyetola during the legal challenge of the 2022 Osun gubernatorial election, raising questions about the objectivity of his current stance.

“I therefore call on the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, chaired by the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to investigate and, if necessary, sanction Prince Lateef Fagbemi for professional misconduct and political bias that is unbecoming of his esteemed office. The continued seizure of Osun's local government allocations has caused needless suffering for local government workers, traditional rulers, pensioners, and health sector personnel for over five months,” Apesin concluded.
