Unwarranted Outburst by Former Speaker Timothy Owoeye – A Disgrace to Democratic Decorum.
Unwarranted Outburst by Former Speaker Timothy Owoeye – A Disgrace to Democratic Decorum
Osogbo, June 7, 2025.
I watched with great dismay a viral press conference addressed by the immediate past speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Timothy Owoeye, flanked by a few members of the Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC). In the video, the former Speaker repeatedly asserted that the APC gubernatorial ticket is “not for sale” to the Adeleke family — a statement that smacks of political intolerance, fear, and disrespect for democratic norms.
This development came barely 48 hours after a widely publicized Sallah visit to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by a respected Nigerian business mogul, Dr. Deji Adeleke; his brother and Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke; and his globally celebrated son and hip-hop artist, David Adeleke (a.k.a. Davido). That visit was a demonstration of respect, unity, and statesmanship. However, it has clearly unsettled certain elements within the Osun APC, which now resort to inflammatory rhetoric to mask their insecurities.
The disparaging remarks made by Timothy Owoeye are not only an affront to the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but they also insult the integrity and contribution of the Adeleke family — a family that has, without question, contributed immensely to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
It is deeply embarrassing for any individual — let alone a former Speaker — to insinuate that President Tinubu, a man of vast experience, influence, and accomplishments, could be trading gubernatorial tickets. Such reckless and childish commentary brings nothing but dishonor to our democratic institutions and must not be condoned.
On behalf of well-meaning and reasonable citizens of Osun State, I hereby tender an unreserved apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Adeleke family for this unfortunate incident. We demand that Mr. Timothy Owoeye and his co-travelers in that ill-fated press conference issue a public apology within 24 hours or face formal calls for sanctions.
The Office of the President — that of the most populous Black nation on Earth — can not be reduced to a subject of ridicule by parochial and politically desperate individuals. Similarly, the Adeleke family — known for their immense contributions to Nigeria’s per capita income and socio-political advancement — deserves to be treated with dignity and not with cheap slander.
Lastly, I commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for his transformational leadership in Osun State. His visionary governance continues to elevate our state to new heights, and we remain proud of his achievements.
Signed,
Apesin Abiodun Adegoke
Concerned Citizen of Osun State.
